About Curvenote

Curvenote is building the infrastructure for connected knowledge in a computable world, because static PDFs are the weakest link in how science and technical work get shared, losing the data, code, and context behind them.

We started as researchers frustrated with that disconnect and built the SCMS, a web-first platform for compiling, publishing, and preserving technical work. We're a core contributor to MyST Markdown and run on an open-core model: open-source formats and tools, with enterprise features for scale and security. Researcher-led and Y Combinator-backed, we're now expanding beyond academic publishing into broader technical and industry workflows.

The Role

We're looking for a Senior Frontend Developer to help build the interfaces and experiences researchers use to write, review, and publish computational documents, from live-rendered structured data to real-time collaborative editing.

Our web experience is built in React and TypeScript on top of Remix, rendering JSON based content directly into rich, interactive articles with math, citations, cross-references, and embedded interactivity and computational elements. You'll work closely with design, product, and engineering leadership to set the direction for our front-end architecture, not just implement it.

What You'll Do

  • Own the architecture and quality of Curvenote's front end, across our products and hosted sites and content on our platform
  • Lead work within our JSON-to-React rendering pipeline to support new content types - interactive figures, citations, cross-references, embedded notebooks
  • Turn designs into accessible, performant, well-tested components, and set standards for our shared component library
  • Proactively work with the rest of our engineering team to employ AI developer tooling and agentic development practices safely throughout the development of our frontend stack
  • Partner with design and product to shape flows for editorial and collaborative workflows, not just isolated features
  • Make and document architectural decisions, state management, rendering performance, component structure, that the rest of the team builds on when implementing front ends across our stack
  • Represent the product externally where useful: with partners, at conferences, in blog posts or documentation

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or equivalent.
  • 8+ years of professional front-end development experience with React and TypeScript, including time spent setting technical direction, not just implementing tickets
  • Experience with a meta-framework such as Remix, Next.js, or similar (Remix experience is a strong plus, not a requirement)
  • Comfort working in a monorepo alongside backend and platform teams
  • A track record of translating polished designs and specs into clean, maintainable, scalable components, working closely with our product and design leads
  • Excellent written communication. You can explain requirements, plans, business logic and technical information clearly both within an engineering team and more broadly with product, design and customers. Genuine interest in science, open access, or research infrastructure
  • A positive and proactive attitude to the use of AI based tools in software development, and a drive to harness and utilize these
  • Experience working within a distributed, remote and/or hybrid team

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with scientific publishing, preprints, or research workflows
  • Experience with markup/authoring tools, Jupyter notebooks, or computational reproducibility
  • Experience in developing applications is science, open access or a research context
  • Prior experience at an open-core or open-source-adjacent company
