Senior Full Stack Developer

About Curvenote
Curvenote is building the infrastructure for connected knowledge in a computable world, because static PDFs are the weakest link in how science and technical work get shared, losing the data, code, and context behind them.
We started as researchers frustrated with that disconnect and built the SCMS, a web-first platform for compiling, publishing, and preserving technical work. We're a core contributor to MyST Markdown and run on an open-core model: open-source formats and tools, with enterprise features for scale and security. Researcher-led and Y Combinator-backed, we are expanding beyond academic publishing into broader technical and industry workflows.
The Role
We're looking for a Senior Full Stack Developer to help build Curvenote end to end, from the PostgreSQL database and data model up through the APIs and services that power our product and editorial/publishing workflows.
Curvenote's platform runs on a TypeScript monorepo with Prisma over PostgreSQL, Supabase and a React/Remix front end, serving both our open-source CLI/publishing tools and our hosted enterprise APIs and products.
You'll work directly with our CTO and the rest of engineering, with real ownership over how the product's data, services, and interfaces evolve as we scale from single-author projects to institutional and journal-scale publishing.
What You'll Do
- Own features end to end, schema design, API and service work, and the front-end surface they power
- Design and evolve our PostgreSQL schema and data models across the core platform, the products is supports and its editorial/publishing workflows
- Design data models that hold up as usage scales from an individual author's project to a journal or institution running hundreds of thousands of submissions
- Lead migrations, indexing, and query performance work so the platform stays fast as data volume and concurrency grow
- Build and maintain the APIs and services that connect our data layer to the React/Remix front end and our open-source CLI
- Proactively work with the rest of our engineering team to employ AI developer tooling and agentic development practices safely throughout the development of our stack
- Think about data integrity and separation of concerns across our open source contributions, open core and proprietary products
- Help set standards for testing, backups, migrations, and data safety as we take on more institutional and enterprise customers with real compliance expectations
- Debug and resolve production issues quickly and calmly, across the stack
- Represent the product externally where useful: with partners, at conferences, in blog posts or documentation
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or equivalent.
- 8+ years of experience as a full stack or backend-leaning engineer, with deep, hands-on expertise in data modelling, API design, infrastructure and application builds
- Strong experience with both an ORM such as Prisma (or equivalent) and working in raw SQL.
- Comfort working across TypeScript/Node.js and a modern front-end framework (React or similar) and some experience with modern frameworks such as Remix, ReactRouter or next.js.
- A track record of designing data models and APIs for complex, evolving domains, not just CRUD apps.
- Experience scaling a multi-tenant SaaS product, including backend performance tuning under real production load.
- Comfort owning infrastructure and product decisions with real autonomy, we're a small team, and you won't be handed a spec for everything.
- Excellent written communication. You can explain a scheme decision or a migration plan clearly.
- Genuine interest in science, open access, or research infrastructure.
- A positive and proactive attitude to the use of AI based tools in software development, and a drive to harness and utilize these.
- Experience working within a distributed, remote and/or hybrid team
Nice to have
- Familiarity with scientific publishing, preprints, or research workflows
- Experience with markup/authoring tools, Jupyter notebooks, or computational reproducibility
- Prior experience at an open-core or open-source-adjacent company
Why Curvenote
- Work on infrastructure that actually changes how science gets shared
- Small team, high ownership, direct access to leadership
- Backed by YC and investors focused on scientific and open infrastructure
- A mission-aligned, technical, low-ego team
