Bots & AI traffic

Curvenote Reader gives you control over how automated traffic — search crawlers, scrapers, and AI agents — reaches your content. How strict or permissive this should be depends on your goals, and enterprise customers configure the policy that fits their needs.

Bot protection

Reader applies bot protection at the endpoint using a combination of bot-management services. Because it operates at the endpoint, the policy covers your whole Reader site and can be tuned without changing your content or publishing workflows.

The policy is configurable along a spectrum:

  • Strict — block automated and AI traffic, serving only human readers (and, optionally, verified bots such as search-engine crawlers).

  • Balanced — allow verified, well-behaved bots while rate-limiting or challenging suspicious traffic.

  • Permissive — welcome agentic and AI traffic, enabling programmatic access to your corpus.

The goal is that you always know what bot and AI traffic is reaching your content, and that you remain in control of how it is handled.

Analytics and non-human traffic

Curvenote Reader’s analytics are designed to distinguish automated traffic from human readers, so you can understand both how people read and how agents access your content — rather than conflating the two.

This matters most for interaction events — hovering over citations, expanding figures, diving into links. These are inherently human signals; automated and AI traffic does not generate them directly. That makes interaction analytics a clean view of real reader behavior, while page views and downloads can be segmented into human and automated traffic.

Agentic access

Blocking everything is not always the goal, and agentic access to your corpus can is increasingly a way that many readers interact and access your content. Structured, machine-readable access to a corpus can be genuinely useful — enabling agentic use cases such as discovery, retrieval, summarization, and analysis across your content. Because Curvenote Reader renders content as open, structured formats (i.e. OXA), your corpus is well suited to responsible AI and agent access where you choose to allow it. Curvenote Reader gives you the control to decide where on the spectrum your content and audience belong.
